In the process of researching the Pakistan-India border, I went from Lahore to discover farm-lands that we, Pakistanis share with India. With the help of the ranger on duty, I was able to go to the “zero line” where I recorded the conversation between the ranger and myself. He guided me through the stretch of field and referred to either side of the boundary as “us” and “them.” The ranger protects the farmers on the Pakistani side, but also makes sure they don’t cross over into Indian territory. He also made sure I didn’t do the same, and allowed me to collect sand from both sides of the border. He assured me that the border looked the same throughout and that once I had seen this stretch I did not need to explore any further.
